Suzaku instantly comes off as a very dedicated and self-sacrificing person. He has a firm belief in the idea that to change Britannia, one has to change it from within. This explains a lot about why Suzaku chose to join the Britannian army. One more reason, which I think is the one that is closer to him, is because he didn't want his father's death to be in vain.
Suzaku is something of a martyr; he wouldn't mind dying for someone else. In fact, it's almost as if he wants to die in battle. Lelouch has mentioned both in the anime and manga that Suzaku had been a little more selfish in the past, but personally, I think Suzaku is still a bit selfish. Being reckless in battle, wanting to sacrifice himself, is due to his own desire to atone for his past sins, specifically killing his own father. Of course, I'm not disregarding the fact that Suzaku cares a lot for his friends. Still, I don't believe that Suzaku is completely selfless. It's a bit heartbreaking to watch Suzaku punish himself by taking in all the taunts and criticism due to his status as a Japanese involved in the Britannian Army. Suzaku always seems so sad, carrying the burden of his father's death and trying to live by his ideal of changing Britannia from the inside. Suzaku mentioned that he felt kind of happy after meeting with Lelouch and Nunnally again, so I think Suzaku had also been hanging on to this little peice of happiness. And although Suzaku's words to Lelouch at the end of the season had been hurtful, when I think of the pain Suzaku is constantly experiencing and how it seems to fade away when he's with Lelouch and his other friends, it seems understandable. I understand his devastation and feeling of betrayal when he found out that Lelouch and Zero have been one person all the while, because it had been the only true thing he had left after Euphemia died, and that to had also been destroyed.
