it was you who picked
the pieces up, when I was a broken soul
Suzaku and Lelouch first met when Lelouch and Nunnally had been sent to Japan by Lelouch's father, the Emperor of Britannia, as a diplomatic peace trade. At first, Suzaku didn't like Lelouch because he thought Lelouch didn't care about anyone, but eventually they got to know each other better and became close friends.
However, Japan was attacked, despite Lelouch and Nunnally still there. Lelouch, Nunnally, and Suzaku left the ruins of where they had been staying, and a ten-year old Lelouch swore to Suzaku that he was going to destroy Britannia.
There is a slight difference in the Code Geass manga, anime, and manga spin-offs regarding the events that happened afterwards. In the manga, now 17 year-olds Lelouch and Suzaku had already both been studying in Ashford Academy, but Suzaku had been ignoring Lelouch because he was afraid that Lelouch's identity as the Prince of Britannia would be revealed. In the anime and in the Code Geass - Suzaku's Counterattack manga, Lelouch and Suzaku had been separated, and it was only until Lelouch got swept into conflict between the Britannian Empire and the resistance group in Shinjuku that he met Suzaku again. When Lelouch unintentionally opened the "secret weapon" of the Britannians, Suzaku appeared and covered Lelouch's mouth and nose in an attempt to save him from the "poisonous gas". They were equally surprised when they saw a girl instead. Suzaku, under the impression that Lelouch was a terrorist, told Lelouch not to kill the girl. Lelouch retorted by saying that Suzaku was fighting for the wrong side, and that if he wanted to protect everyone then he should destroy Britannia.
Surprised, Suzaku then recognized his childhood friend. He then took off his mask and revealed himself to be Suzaku. Lelouch grew confused and asked why Suzaku was in the army, and Suzaku also asked why Lelouch was a terrorist. Lelouch cleared things up and said he was just a student. In the Code Geass manga, Lelouch had already seen C.C. and Suzaku never appeared to save Lelouch from the "poisonous gas". The Britannian squad then found Lelouch, and the Head Officer had been about to shoot Lelouch when Suzaku told him to stop and not shoot, because Lelouch was his friend. Suzaku then took off his mask, and this is when Lelouch recognized Suzaku and was surprised that Suzaku was in the Britannian Army.
In both the manga and anime, the Head Officer commanded Suzaku to kill Lelouch, but Suzaku refused so the Head Officer shot him, much to Lelouch's horror. When the Head Officer aimed for Lelouch, C.C. shielded him and took a bullet to her head. However, C.C. managed to give Lelouch the power of the Geass, which Lelouch used to command the Head Officer and his direct commands to "die".Lelouch had been surprised to see the Head Officer and the other soldiers shoot themselves in front of him, but he quickly recovered from the initial shock and realized that he now had the ability that can actually destroy Britannia.
The anime goes on to see Lelouch stealing Villeta Nu's Sutherland and commanding the rebel group in the fight against the Britannian forces. It is also revealed that Suzaku had been saved because the bullet shot by the Head Officer hit his father's watch instead of him directly. Lloyd and Cecille, who had Suzaku under their care, asked Suzaku to pilot the Lancelot, an experimental Knightmare. The Lancelot overwhelmed the rebel forces and got into a fight with Lelouch and his Sutherland, at which Lelouch lost.In the manga, the battle in Shinjuku never happens, although Suzaku is also saved from the bullet by his father's watch. He learns from Lloyd that Ashford Academy was being run over by terrorists, and quickly rushed back because Lelouch and Nunnally were both there. Lelouch, in the meantime, assisted in leading the activists in Ashford Academy to an escape route.
Suzaku rushed to the rooftop and told Lelouch to stop because his actions will only bring hatred and sorrow, and this is where Lelouch first found out that Suzaku had survived. Surprised, but happy that Suzaku was all right, Lelouch told Suzaku that he wanted to destroy Britannia. He then escaped using a smoke bomb. This scene never happens in the anime.Another manga-only scene between Suzaku and Lelouch is the scene where Lelouch found Suzaku trying to save a cat that was stuck up in a tree in Ashford Academy. In the end, the cat just jumped onto Lelouch's arms while Suzaku lost balance. :p Suzaku did a flip on the beam balance at the park, and when Lelouch tried it too and failed, Suzaku pointed out that Lelouch had always been trying to beat Suzaku with these things but never really won, except in Chess and Shogi. They began to compete in monkey bars, jumping on poles, and I honestly don't know what they were competing on in the swings (^^;), but eventually Lelouch lost and treated Suzaku to crepes.
Up in a tree, Lelouch mentioned that Suzaku had always been good at sports, and that he missed climbing trees like this. Suzaku asked Lelouch if the girl in the capsule was alright, but Lelouch didn't know. The cat they "saved" earlier then appeared, clinging onto Lelouch, and Suzaku told Lelouch to keep the cat since the cat seemed to like him. Lelouch then told Suzaku that if he kept the cat, would Suzaku come visit him? Suzaku then said "alright", after a while.Rivalz finally found Lelouch sometime afterwards, and was a bit surprised that Lelouch was with Suzaku. Lelouch told Suzaku, in front of Rivalz, that they'd see each other later, and Suzaku agreed.
